Witnessing
Through their work, a collective of artists reflect on the issues of our times, from abject poverty and terrorism, to the environment and war, and ultimately, the human condition. Touched by what they have witnessed in the world, the artists are moved to communicate it through their art. Each has chosen his/her own medium, whether it be painting, sculpture or photography, from which to "give voice" to what they see going on in the world.
With its premiere at the Icehouse Gallery in Greenport in November of 2004, "Witnessing" featured the work of five artists. The exhibit has since gained momentum, taking on additional artist. The hope is for the exhibit to continue to travel throughout Long Island, New York and beyond, gathering even more voices along the way, and making us all witnesses to the worl′s events. As Anna Jurinich, one of the artist in the group says, "Unfortunately, I can′t close my eyes to what′s going on... It touches the soul."
Currently the group of artists includes Steve Alpert, Beryl Bernay, Rani Carson, Janet Culbertson, Doug Going, Hannah Gray, Anna Jurinich, Elizabeth Malunowicz, Joan R. Rogers and Dennis Snyder.
